James Monroe Owens, Jr., born on May 17, 1942, in Cherokee, Alabama, passed away on April 7, 2026, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He was a dedicated member of the Moose Club and enjoyed working, fishing, woodworking, brain teaser puzzles, and grilling out. He was proud to be part of the work force that built the Tenn-Tom Waterway earlier in his life.
Cutshall Funeral Home of Iuka, MS is entrusted with the arrangements. A visitation will be held on April 18, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Asphalt Rock Baptist Church, located at 2900 Asphalt Rock Road in Cherokee, Alabama. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the same location. Burial will follow in Asphalt Rock Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Seth McMillen, Sr., Seth McMillen, Jr., James Bumpus, and Jeff Grant.
James is survived by his daughter, Rhonda Owens; grandchildren that he dearly cherished: granddaughter Jennifer McMillen (Seth Sr), great granddaughter Kaydence McMillen, great grandson Seth McMillen Jr, grandson James Bumpus (Megan), great grandsons Jameson Bumpus and James Bumpus Jr., great granddaughters Serenity Mansfield and Trinity Mansfield, granddaughter Amanda DeJournett (Dylan), great granddaughter Ella DeJournett, great grandson Benton DeJournett, granddaughter Samantha Rhoades, grandson Ricky Edgar (Ashley), great grandsons Mason Edgar and Maddox Edgar, great granddaughter Maci Edgar; nephews James A. Owens (Carole) and James Duncan (Tracey); niece Becky Grant (Jeff); great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Monroe Owens, Sr. and Gladys Oleen Black Owens; his daughter, Theresa Rhoades; his brothers, Lawrence William Owens and Daniel Wayne Owens; his great-grandson, Jayson Bumpus; his niece, Shelia Hamilton; and his sister-in-law, Joyce Owens.
James Monroe Owens, Jr. will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
